Calm aboard is not the same as contained on shore.

Hold the record still
This page preserves what was known in early May 2026. Later WHO revisions are deliberately not written back.
WHO Disease Outbreak News DON599, May 4, 2026: 7 cases — 2 confirmed, 5 suspected — with 3 deaths, 1 patient critical, 3 mild. Symptom onset ran April 6 to April 28. The vessel carried 147 people of 23 nationalities and was off Cabo Verde. WHO assessed global risk as low.
The ship and the route
The itinerary: Ushuaia, departing April 1, to Antarctica, then South Georgia, Nightingale Island, Tristan da Cunha, St Helena, and Ascension.
The Johannesburg death
Case 2 disembarked at St Helena, flew St Helena to Johannesburg, and died in Johannesburg on April 26. She had also been pulled from KLM flight KL592, Johannesburg to Amsterdam, on April 25 — before departure. Do not repeat the version in which she died on arrival in Amsterdam. She never boarded.
The Swiss case
Switzerland's Federal Office of Public Health, May 6: a male passenger, Andes virus detected at Geneva, isolated in Zurich. Swiss authorities assessed public risk as low. The May 7 count was 8 cases — the DON599 seven plus the Swiss case.
A flight attendant was suspected as of May 7; later reporting said the attendant tested negative.
What the ship knew, and when
Captain Jan Dobrogowski, in an April 12 NBC video, said the first death was believed to be natural causes, not infectious. Oceanwide let 29 passengers off at St Helena on April 24, before contact tracing. The theory that exposure traced to a landfill outing in Ushuaia is one theory in circulation. WHO's position: exposure undetermined.
The background rates
Argentina's health ministry: 101 confirmed hantavirus cases since epidemiological week 27 of 2025, a season running above the prior year.
CDC: hantavirus is uncommon and rodent-borne; Andes virus is the only type with known person-to-person transmission; the U.S. sees roughly 30 HPS cases a year, with 890 cases from 1993 to 2023.
The 17 passengers
One account put 17 U.S. passengers in Arizona, Georgia, and California. NBC, the same day, reported some passengers were already spread across five states while 17 were still aboard awaiting a U.S. aircraft. The two accounts are preserved here side by side; the discrepancy is the point.
What this was not
- Not airborne the way influenza or SARS-CoV-2 are.
- Not, on any official record, engineered.
- Not, at that time, a community cluster on shore.
Calm aboard is not the same as contained on shore — but as of the May record, nothing on shore contradicted the low-risk assessments.
