## What changed
On 5 September 2026, US Central Command said American forces struck three Iran-linked oil tankers after Iranian forces targeted US Navy warships earlier that day. BBC, CNBC, AP, and other outlets carry the same day as a tit-for-tat maritime exchange: two tankers permanently disabled (one named near Kharg Island), a third destroyed in the Gulf of Oman, and Iranian state media confirming tanker damage while claiming the IRGC answered by attacking six ships, including three US-affiliated vessels and three oil tankers on an unauthorised Hormuz route. No American personnel were reported harmed.
This is not hormuz-larak. Larak (30 August) named a land strike on IRGC launchers preparing sea-mine rockets into Hormuz - a named island, not a tanker kill. This URL is hormuz-kharg-tankers: export-hub hulls, carrier/destroyer targeting as the US casus, and Kharg on the record as the loading geography.
The same Saturday tape sits inside a six-month US-Iran conflict that had seen relative calm before fighting flared again about a week earlier. Weekend markets were muted; the product here is interdiction logic at the export terminal, not a new channel-sweep claim.

## How it is being framed
Interdiction frame. CENTCOM and US outlets put three Iran-linked tankers out of service in one day and name Kharg for at least one disablement. The job is shadow-fleet revenue and export-hub pressure.
Retaliation frame. The US says the tankers followed Iranian targeting of a carrier and a guided-missile destroyer the same day. Iran's state media confirms tanker hits and claims a six-ship IRGC answer.
Escalation frame. Fortune and others write "higher economic cost" and a possible transformation of the war. That is not the same as a confirmed TSS sweep or a named Oman-channel rate change.
Calm-break frame. BBC: fighting flared again after weeks of relative calm. Calendar context, not a new named hull list.
Those jobs are not the same story. Kharg as the export hub can be checked against the CNBC/CENTCOM line. A claimed six-ship Iranian answer is still Iranian state media until second-source hull names land.
