The conventional narrative is that the mines are already gone. Tuesday's public record is a presidential claim and a same-day meeting in Tehran to schedule a sweep.

What changed
On Tuesday 25 August 2026, President Trump posted on Truth Social that the United States Navy had informed him all mines had been "removed and/or detonated" from the international waters of the Strait of Hormuz. Axios carried the post at 12:28 ET. Zero Hedge reprinted it at 14:40 ET.
The same post said Iran had been notified that any ship or boat placing new mines would be "immediately and systematically destroyed." "Zero Tolerance policy on mine placement."
Two unnamed U.S. officials with direct knowledge told Axios the Navy cleared the Traffic Separation Scheme -- the median lane between Oman and Iran. Those officials said Iran deployed dozens of mines in the median lane; committed to remove them in the summer memorandum of understanding; the MOU unraveled and the mines were never removed; Navy underwater drones scanned and located more than 100 objects suspected to be mines; the U.S. military contracted private companies to remove or detonate them.
We confirm that Trump said it, and that two unnamed Axios officials repeated it. We do not confirm that the Navy swept the TSS.
The same day, Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi and Oman's foreign minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Albusaidi met in Tehran. CNBC published at 13:16 ET. Axios also has the meeting.
They discussed a temporary joint shipping corridor through Hormuz as a precursor to a permanent administration arrangement. Oman's Foreign Ministry said the proposed framework includes a joint project to clear the strait of mines.
Badr, in a social post, said he was hopeful a corridor and "practical arrangements to restore safe navigation" would be announced soon. He described the talks as constructive. "Future management of the Strait and a permanent solution will follow in due course."
Axios, named: they did not reach a deal. The language is "discussing a framework" for a temporary joint corridor and to clear mines, plus technical talks on a permanent route and future administration, plus a "mechanism for information exchange, traffic management, and the provision of relevant maritime and security services."
The talks sit under a collapsed 17 June U.S.-Iran MOU clause that Iran and Oman would "define the future administration and maritime services" in Hormuz, CNBC said.
CNBC, on the record: Oman's mine-clearing mission appeared to contradict Trump's earlier Tuesday statement that the Navy had already removed the mines from international waters.
Badr is hopeful. CNBC is "discussed." Axios is no deal. Do not read a signed corridor off this page.

How it is being framed
Cleared-already frame. Trump, Truth Social, Tuesday. Two unnamed Axios officials: the TSS / median lane is cleared. Axios: the Iran-Oman draft is "far less relevant" because Washington says the median lane is already swept.

If the still-to-clear frame is right, the next fact is an announced joint sweep or an Oman or Iran statement that the mines remain. If the no-deal frame is right, the next fact is whether Badr's "soon" becomes an announcement, or stays a framework. We do not have a minefield table in this snapshot.
